A Grinder Pump is a waste management device. Waste water from a household appliance such as a toilet or washing machine flows through the home’s pipes into the grinder pump’s holding tank. Once the waste inside the tank reaches a specific level, the pump will turn on, grind the waste, and pump it to the local sewer system.
Grinder Pumps are an important part of many sewer systems in Baldwin County, but when they are not working properly, plumbing service is needed immediately.  Grinder Pumps that malfunction, may cause the tank to fill up and sewage to possibly back up into the home or yard.  All About Plumbing offers superior Grinder Pump Service at any time you may need us.

Grinder PumpTo maintain a properly working Grinder Pump, sanitary napkins, diapers, kitty litter, paint, oil (both motor oil and cooking oils), etc. should not be flushed or poured down any drain, whether the home is connected to a gravity sewer system, septic tank, or grinder pump. These items can damage your pump or build up in the tank and cause blockages.

Most grinder pumps in Fairhope, Daphne and Spanish Fort do not require much preventive maintenance. However, grinder pumps that use floats to sense the level in the holding tank are prone to grease buildup that may turn the pump on unnecessarily, or not turn on the pump at all, causing the tank to fill up and sewage to possibly back up into the home or yard. To prevent this, grinder pumps that use floats may need to be cleaned to remove the grease from the floats during an annual professional plumbing inspection which is available with most of the service agreements offered by All About Plumbing.  Please see our Professional Maintenance Plan page.

Wastewater Lift Stations

Wastewater lift stations (or sewage pump stations) are designed for pumping wastewater or sewage from a lower to higher elevation when a gravity system is not possible or is too costly.  Lift stations are used to reduce the costs of sewer system construction.  When gravity sewers are installed in trenches deeper than three meters, the cost of installing a sewer line increases significantly.  Wastewater lift stations are a practical and economical choice.

Lift stations include a wastewater receiving well (wet-well), a grinder pump, piping, pumps, floats, motors, a power supply system, and an equipment control and alarm system.  Lift station equipment and systems are often installed in an enclosed structure. They can be constructed on-site (custom-designed) or prefabricated.
Due to the much reduced health and safety concerns, and smaller footprint and visibility, submersible pump sewage pump stations have almost completely replaced traditional sewage pump stations. Submersible lift stations typically cost less than dry-well stations and operate without frequent pump maintenance.  Submersible lift stations do not usually include large above ground structures and tend to blend in with their surrounding environment.

Sewage Ejection Systems

Sewage ejector pumps are designed to pump residential sewage to an elevated city sewer line or septic system.  All residential plumbing systems rely on the force of gravity to move water into the incoming lines and to move sewer waste out.  When wastewater cannot flow to its proper destination with gravity, and if the geography of the site is such that it prevents sewage from moving fast enough on its own the solution is a sewage ejection system.
A typical distinctive application of a sewage ejector system is in a home where a bath is located lower than the height of the sewer line which leaves the home.  The sewer ejection pump lifts the waste from the lower level (basement type homes) up to the sewer line at the main level.
With sewer ejection systems, it is crucial to avoid certain items from entering the drain lines.  More than 90% of service calls related to ejector pump problems are calls in which foreign objects have been introduced into the sewer.   One of the most common problems with malfunctioning ejector systems is the disposal of handy wipes into the sewer.
When considering maintenance, the ejector system should be checked once a year by a qualified plumbing contractor.  The main item checked during a yearly inspection is to see that the floats are properly set.  There will be a visual inspection of the inside of the tank to ensure that no foreign object damage has occurred to the moving parts.  The pump ohms are also checked, which in most cases this will indicate what the life expectancy of the pump is.  Call All About Plumbing Services for a maintenance check of your sewer ejection system.

Sump Pumps

To avoid any confusion, there is a big difference between sewer ejection systems and sump pumps.  The sump pump is used to move clean water from an area where water is not desired.  Sump pumps are used under homes where ground water forms or during our monsoon season when the water runs under a home to such a degree that is becomes a hazard.   Sump pumps are common in homes with basements that occasionally accumulate water during storms.  All About Plumbing Services offers expert Sump Pump Repair in Fairhope, Spanish Fort, Daphne, and Baldwin County, Alabama.
